CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Thursday 20th August, 45 Camden High School students visited Holroyd as part of a cross-cultural exchange program that has been established between the two schools since 2008. The aim of the project is to develop new friendships and understanding, as well as student skills, knowledge and understanding of Australian cultural norms and diversity in the Australian community within social, study and work contexts. The program also aims to build student confidence to interact successfully in a work and social context. It provides opportunities for students to improve confidence and skills in oral and written English communication through casual conversation and activities accomplished together.

During the project students have been given the opportunity to research a career of interest as well as socialise through sport and cooking sessions. During their most recent visit students participated in a choice of activities between sport, card and board games and cooking, in addition to participation in classes for new arrival students. This provided the opportunity to work closely together as an avenue to foster better understanding and closer relationships between the students and schools. The final exchange is scheduled for Term 4 when students will perform a drama presentation and deliver their career research findings.

INSPIRING TEACHER FEATURED IN Television SERIES

Holroyd High School Intensive English Centre teacher, Nirupa Badve, is one of four teachers chosen for the new four-part documentary series, Inspiring Teachers, on SBS television’s Inside Australia program this month.

The series goes to air at 8pm over a four week period, starting on Wednesday 6th February. Nirupa is featured on 20th February.

Nirupa teaches mathematics and computer studies in the Holroyd IEC, where non-English speaking background students spend up to a year learning English when they first arrive in Australia. Most of Nirupa’s students are refugees, and many have never been to school until they come to Holroyd. Nirupa’s task is to bring them successfully from the third world into the first in her classroom.

Inspiring Teachers director, Rebecca Barry, whose previous documentary was the much acclaimed Footy Chicks, says she wanted to make something that celebrated humanity in a positive way. Inspiring Teachers has achieved that, she says. The only issue was whittling down the field of inspiring teachers to the four featured in the series. “Choosing the final four teachers was heartbreaking,” she says, “We found so many amazing teachers and schools.”

For Rebecca, one of the most powerful moments in filming the series came when Nirupa’s students talked of their experiences as child refugees on Refugee Day last year. “It was very moving and I felt privileged to be in the room that day,” she said.

Rebecca Barry hopes that people who watch the series are reminded of their own inspiring teachers who made an impact on their lives, and that the film encourages people to acknowledge the value of teaching.

AWARD WINNING WRITER GIVES TIME TO PUBLIC EDUCATION

One of Australia’s most acclaimed and loved children’s writers, Libby Gleeson, has worked at Holroyd High School with Year 7 English classes, teaching them some of the strategies used by writers to explore their imagination to create exciting and unique stories.  It was a fabulous experience for these young students to be able have Libby read their work and answer their questions.  Hossin said, “It made me want to become a writer…she was very inspirational.”

Libby also spent time with senior students who were about to begin writing their major works for the HSC Extension 2 course. Libby was able to offer valuable advice and encourage them to pursue their passion for writing.  Libby is a former ESL teacher whose return to the classroom was greatly appreciated by students and English staff at Holroyd High School.

Libby has also worked since 2004 with a former student of Holroyd High School, Nahid Karimi, now in her second year of a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree at the University of Western Sydney. Nahid is a refugee from Afghanistan. Libby has used Nahid's story as the basis for her latest novel, which will be published in 2008. The novel will be launched during Writers' Week in May, 2008.
